With the most recent election resulting in former President Trump’s victory and return to office, there have been multiple concerns about his policies and what he stands for. His most famous policy is the immigration policy which the media says will remove birth rights for children born in the U.S. if their parents are immigrants. Trump’s other renowned policy is increasing the taxes on tariffs and currently, his removal of The Affordable Care Act is being speculated.
A poll that the Puma Press put out shows that on average 75% of people at NAHS don’t support Trump. It is not much of a surprise that this was the outcome considering our student body is mostly of Latino origin and Trump’s plans aim to deport a mass amount of Latino immigrants. With the number of plans and new policies Trump has, the public wonders which plan is the most concerning. Out of 17 questions in the poll, the most important issues for students were education, healthcare access, housing, civil rights, cost of living, and climate change. In a different section of the poll with nine questions, students who favored Trump supported his plans for deportation, cost of living, tax cuts for corporations, and crime control.
Even though most of the school supported Harris, what did others outside our school think about Trump? In a PBS article by News Desk, on average White people supported Trump more with 60% of White men being in favor of Trump while only 30% were in favor of Harris. White women were more inclined to support Harris as 46% of White women voted for Harris and 53% voted for Trump. Surprisingly, Latino men were more inclined to support Trump in 2024 compared to 2020 where only 38% of Latino men supported Trump but in 2024 48% of Latino men were in favor or voted Trump. Women in all race groups were more inclined to Harris by 55% compared to Trump since Harris’ policies aimed to protect women’s reproductive rights.
In the end, the students of NAHS seem to be more worried and suspicious of the new President-elect than in support of his plans and new policies. On the outside, men seemed more inclined to support Trump and his policies while women were more inclined to be against Trump and his policies according to the News Desk article on PBS.
