On February 1st, our very own Academic Decathlon team scored second place out of forty-seven schools in the 44th annual LAUSD Super Quiz. Huge congratulations to the team for their hard work and dedication, which has paid off. Their next fight is on February 22nd; the LAUSD Academic Decathlon awards ceremony. There, they will find out if they move on to the state competition in Santa Clara.
The NAHS team is led by coaches Mr. Mangione and Ms. Schink, assisted by Mr. Gross. The official team is as follows: Misty Stolz, Mervile Dumayag, Julianne Del Rosario, Alejandro MagaƱa, Emily Danihel, Marc John Aya, Alexis Westermiller, Samantha Rosales, and Cyrus Morales.
There are also JV Team members Lexie Peralta, Guadalupe Ortiz, and Marlyn Arevalo Barajas.
Academic Decathlon consists of ten subjects: math, social science, natural science, music, art, literature, economics, speech, interview, and essay. Each year, the subjects tie into the theme. This year’s theme is “Our Changing Climate”. The team is separated into three groups based on their GPA: honors, scholastic, and varsity. Throughout the year, the students study these subjects and compete, write an essay, do multiple-choice tests, and then perform a prepared and impromptu speech for judges, along with an interview portion. The Super Quiz is a team event that does not count towards the final team score but instead is an added bonus. Within their GPA groups, students have ten to twenty seconds to answer fourteen questions in front of a live audience.
