The Puma Family keeps changing with new faces joining our team. This year we have a total of five new teachers and one new counselor. Here is all you need to know about them.
Dr. Barbara Scott is a returning NAHS teacher who previously worked with a team to develop a STEAM MicroCredential. She also supported teachers of all levels from provisional to National Board Certified, from 2013 to 2018. Scott originally taught Biology, Physiology, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science here at NAHS from 2003 to 2013. She currently teaches Biology and Physiology in room 423. Scott enjoys her free time by sewing, reading, spending time with her family, and learning better how to teach effectively. Fun fact about Dr. Scott is her husband is a retired teacher and also taught science at NAHS. Ms. Estrada was one of her students. Dr. Scott took Mr. Johnson position as he is now teaching physical education for NAHS replacing a vacant position.
Mr. Loren Ethington has been teaching for 17 years. He will be teaching Algebra 1 and Honors, and Algebra 2. He originally taught as a math teacher at Reseda Charter High school. Mr Ethington is interested in starting a club that involves autos, classic cars, or hot rods. Mr. Ethington’s pastimes include camping, cars , and cooking.
Mr. Julian Salazar is also in the Mathematics department. He teaches Geometry and Algebra. This is Mr. Salazar’s first year of teaching, he completed his student teaching at Panorama High School teaching Statistics. Mr. Salazar personally enjoys comic books, video games, and generally enjoys reading about science topics. Mr. Salazar finishes off by saying ¨I’m glad to be a part of this school and I look forward to meeting all the bright new faces that will be around.”
Mr. Joseph Schwab is a new social studies teacher and will be teaching World History, US History and Ethnic Studies. Mr. Schwab also did a lot for his previous school Venice High School. He was an academic coach there, and advising the CSF club. He was also the sponsor the graduating of class of 2024 class and also Surf Club, Skateboard Club and helped with the GSA. Schwab has been teaching for over six years. In his free time, he is a father to a little boy that is one in a half years old. Mr. Schwab enjoys skateboarding, surfing, and loves to play the drums. He ends off by saying ¨I’m really excited to start here at NAHS and working with the students and working with the teachers to bring you guys the best opportunities possible.¨
NAHS also welcomes a new A-G counselor Mr. Mario Alonzo. Mr. Alonzo explains that A-G counselors do not focus on students that have the last name A-G but a position named after all A-G Requirements. Mr. Alonzo explained how serious his job is. How the A-G Program tracks down students that don’t have enough credits. Through credit recovery and drop out prevention, they help overall make sure students graduate to have a positive future. Mr. Alonzo also enjoys sport such has weightlifting and good old American Football. Before he was an A-G Counselor he coached high school football for six years. Mr. Alonzo is going into his sixth year as a A-G Counselor. He enjoys helping students find hope, motivation, optimism, and positive future aspirations.
